Re: Sports Equipment Encumbrance
It appears that all the future hockey and basketball all stars are out in full swing this time of
the year. Unfortunately, their inspirations are causing a havoc for our drivers trying to navigate
your streets to service the wheelie bins when their equipment is left on the roadway.
Our ability to service most areas is primarily dependent on providing and maintaining access. For
us, access is generally defined as:
Access Requirements
1) Paved or other hard level road surfaces capable of supporting a heavy commercial vehicle.
2) Street wide enough to accommodate safe truck operation with turning radius of 12 metres.
3) Where a dead-end street is used, our distinct preference is to have a cul-de-sac at the end of
street with a minimum radius of 12 metres to avoid any reverse driving operation.
4) No parking on the street or other collection interference (road hockey, basketball net, etc).
5) No overhead restriction to lift the bins (location and maintenance of trees, street lighting,
hydro poles and wires).
6) Sufficient frontage to accommodate the set out of three containers per dwelling three feet
apart.
7) Adequate winter maintenance of the roadway without interference of accumulated snow or ice.
We need your help to warranty the streets are clear of encumbrances on collection day to prevent
any property damage, ensure the efficient and effective collection of the wheelie bins and
guarantee the utmost safety of everyone.
Cul-de-sacs appear to be the general problem areas. If your bylaw officers can offer these
property owners a gentle reminder to clear the street it would be greatly appreciated.
All equipment should be off the roadway. Basketball nets should be turned away from the road so
the hoops do not overhang onto the road portion. Our mechanical arms have been known to “arm
wrestle” with them and we usually win much to the young “all stars” chagrin.
