The Maitland Cemetery is open approximately mid April to November, weather permitting.

In 1858, the Municipal Council of the Town of Goderich purchased from John McDonald, 30 acres of land in Goderich Township for £1,800. The property was described as the south-easterly part of Lot 4. This land was set aside as Maitland Cemetery.

According to available records, the first interment was in November, 1862 (Louisa Osmond).

In 1931, an additional 66 acres was acquired from Mary Ann McLean.

There are approximately 15,000 lots in total in the Maitland Cemetery and currently two-thirds of the lots are used.
